AC League play-off results by year: See also:
Previous AC league winners - all years |
On a day in which was forecast overcast with the prospect of rain the three clubs representing their area leagues met at the Wrest Park club to determine which would represent the region next year in the Croquet England Secretary’s Shield. Fortunately, after a drizzly morning of doubles the weather uplifted at lunchtime and we were blessed with an unexpected summery afternoon. The rain seemed to invigorate the the Old Brentwoods team who in the morning took a 3 – 0 lead over Watford and Pinchbeck.
However, a different picture emerged in the afternoon as, apart from the Old Brentwoods captain Richard Harding, the rest of the team began to struggle to win their games. It should be pointed out at this stage that Richard completed a triple peel, a very rare occurrence in handicap games let alone a final. In fact the final result went down to the wire between Derek Code of Old Brentwoods and Peter Brown of Pinchbeck in which Derek ran out the winner on time 13 – 12, thereby swinging the match the Old Brentwoods way.
