Ken Wheeler Shield results
by year:
This year this Eastern Counties event was hosted at the Wrest Park club on Sunday 3rd August and attracted entries from Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Hertfordshire and Suffolk. The day started under cloudy threatening rainy conditions but fortunately apart from a minor drizzle in the middle of the day the area escaped what adverse weather threatened the rest of the country.
Playing a mixture of GC level doubles and singles there was plenty of serious and competitive play in which during the first session the Cambridgeshire side built up a quite a substantial lead over the first three rounds, followed by Bedfordshire, with Hertfordshire and Suffolk bringing up the rear.
However, in the Gold Medal Round things changed dramatically as the lagging Hertfordshire side upped their game to win all their remaining three games and to lift the trophy by 14 points, followed by Cambridgeshire ending on 11 points, Bedfordshire on 9 and Suffolk on 8.
Thanks must go to the home club who despite the recent dry conditions had prepared the lawns in very good condition, and it was generally agreed an enjoyable day's golf croquet.
