The 16 clubs entered into the League were divided into four areas with the winners coming together at Newport over the weekend of 23rd-24th September. Newport proved a popular venue with no team having too far to travel and members of the home club had turned out in force to prepare the lawns and keep up a constant supply of hot and cold drinks. They also provided fine weather on both days.
The semi-finals were played on Saturday. In the first Letchworth beat Downham Market 10-8, recovering from 8-4 down! In the second semi-final Chelmsford won convincingly against Bury St Edmunds 12-4 in the singles and as time was getting on it was agreed not to play the doubles.
In a keenly contested final on Sunday the teams took lunch after three rounds of singles with the score at 6-6. Chelmsford won the next round of singles 3-1 which meant that Letchworth had to win both rounds of doubles to force a shoot-out. They won one but lost the other leaving Chelmsford (Judith Hand, Les and Sheila Renew and John Marchant) the 10-8 winners. Particular thanks go to Richard Keighley of the Leighton Linslade Club for organising the League throughout the season.
