This year the Anderson Shield Tournament had a different feel to it as only four counties entered teams, with both Suffolk and Bedfordshire unable to raise teams. This meant that the tried and tested doubles formula had to be revised to include a singles element so that the whole weekend could be utilised.
The Tournament was again staged at Colchester over the Spring Bank Holiday Weekend of 29/30th May and attracted entries from Cambridgeshire, Essex, Hertfordshire and Norfolk. Each match comprised two doubles and four singles. Saturday was taken up by the advanced doubles with each county playing each other. At the end of the first day no team had managed to stamp their authority, and the second day began almost on an equal footing.
Sunday's play was advanced singles with each team members playing their listed equivalents. After the first games the position remained all square with no county recording a match win. However, at the completion of the second round both Essex and Herts had recorded wins over Norfolk and Cambs. In the third round Essex had to play Herts, which meant the winners would take the trophy. If however, the match ended in a draw then Essex would be winners on total games won. The match went to the final wire and with Essex getting into a muddle over their final rover hoop they handed the trophy to Herts.
