Ken Wheeler Shield results
by year:
This year the administration of the event ran a lot smoother due to the introduction of a computerised programme written by Hunstanton club member David Boxell. This made it easier and more efficient for the teams to determine who was playing whom and on what allocated lawns.
It was down to the wire for the Hertfordshire team who had a narrow finish in the final game which enabled them to lift the trophy for the third time in five years that this event has been staged.
In the all-play-all match rounds Herts topped the field with 11 game wins, closely followed by last year's winners Norfolk and Cambridgeshire on 9 wins apiece. Proceeding into the Gold Medal doubles round Cambridgeshire made a startling recovery winning quickly both their games over the other two teams giving them an overall match point total of 13. This meant that the previous year's winner Norfolk had to win their remaining game against the Hertfordshire remaining pair to let Cambridgeshire win the day. However, this was not to be and Hertfordshire also finished on 13 points to equal the score with Cambridgeshire.
Under the tournament regulations as Hertfordshire had a better match result in the block phase, they were declared the winners.

Format |
Block Phase Each team will play a match against each other over the first five rounds (i.e. an American Block). A 'match' will comprise two singles games and one doubles. In the first round a team may elect to allocate players in any role (Singles or Doubles) irrespective of handicap. In the second round the Singles/Doubles roles will be reversed. In the third round roles will revert to those of the first round etc.
(Thus, after five rounds each player will have played either 3 Singles and 2 Doubles, or 2 Singles and 3 Doubles). On completion of this Block Phase the three leading teams will qualify for the sixth 'Gold Medal Round'. The leading teams will be decided on Match Wins with any tie being resolved by 'who-beat-whom'. "Gold Medal Round" Format Each team will carry forward games won (each game scoring a single point). Each team will now comprise two Doubles pairs. The pairings may differ from the Block Phase. Pairs will be drawn to play a single game in the following format:
A game win will score two points and be added to the aggregate carried forward. The winning team will be the one with the most points, with any tie being resolved by the match result in the Block Phase. |
