Ken Wheeler Shield results
by year:
This year the Ken Wheeler Shield was played on Sunday 4th August and attracted entries from four of the region's counties - Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Suffolk - and was played on the well prepared lawns at the Colchester club.
Due to the low number of entries and since there was no requirement for double banking the Manager decided to play no-time-limit 19-point games. However, due to the slow play of the first round it was subsequently decided that the remaining programme would be 13-point games instead.
Hertfordshire, last year’s winners, convincingly led the field for the first three rounds, which finished in their favour with a total of 8 points followed by Suffolk on 7, Bedfordshire 6 points and Cambridgeshire on 3 points. However, during the Gold Medal Round of single games Herts lost their way, and following a spirited revival by Suffolk who won all their last games Herts slipped into second place with only 1 win. The Suffolk team ran out the undisputed winners with a total of 16 points. Cambridgeshire finished third with 9 points and Bedfordshire fourth with 6 points.
It should be mentioned that Suffolk last won this tournament in 2013, the third year after it was introduced.
Thanks go to the ladies of the home club for their much appreciated welcome and excellent tea provided.
