The matches shaded yellow are played at home for the team in the left-hand column.
So to read the table easily, (1) find the club in the left-hand column (in bold),
(2) read across to find its scores against each opponent as the first figure given;
(3) read across to find its Home games in yellow and its Away games in white.

2 points for a match win, 1 for a draw. If the overall number of points is tied then
the winner is determined by who-beat-whom, then by game difference, then by
hoop difference, then by other means determined by the Manager.

The final between the two Area winners was played at Chelmsford on Sunday 28th September.

Ipswich captain Martin French
receiving the trophy from
manager Terrey Sparks

In the absence of the League Manager Jason Carley, who was absent due to other playing commitments, the play-off this year was held at the Chelmsford & Bentley Club and was managed by Terrey Sparks, Federation Tournament Organiser.

Both finalists Northampton (East & West Area) and Ipswich (North & Central Area) fielded very evenly matched teams with the same aggregate handicap of 4. Played under a scorching sun with very little breeze, play was of an extremely high standard which led to longer games than expected. So evenly matched were the two teams that at lunch after two rounds the scores were even at 4-4. However, after a short lunch break Ipswich immediately picked up wins in all the games of the next round giving them a lead of 8-4. In the fourth round of singles Ipswich only needed to halve the remaining four games to put the match in no doubt by winning outright. Despite losing the first game to finish, Northampton were not going to give up the fight easily and quickly picked off the next two leaving the score 9-6. If Northampton won their last game the overall result would go to the last round of Doubles.

The winning Ipswich team, L-R: Martin Hart,
Martin French, David Crawford, Martin Leach

This game between David Crawford (Ipswich) and Peter Stansfield (Northampton) was a rather tense affair. After a slow start in which David made early progress Peter fought back to trail 5-4. It looked certain that having both his balls in hoop-running positions at the 10th whilst David's were scattered at long distance the score was to be equalled. However, David had other ideas and with a 30 yard shot aimed at clearing Peter his ball unexpectedly ran hoop 10 giving him a 6-4 lead from which Peter could not recover from, and hence the match to Ipswich 10-6.

As time was running late and because of long distance travel, and as the doubles game would have no bearing on the overall result, they were abandoned by the Manager.

Our thanks must go to John Skuse and the Committee and members of the Chelmsford and Bentley Club for letting the Federation have use of their excellent facilities. This is the first time that The E.A.C.F. has staged an event there and I am certain it will not be the last.

Match Star Player: David Crawford, the only one to achieve four wins and no losses.
